Gasping or choking
One of the main warning signs that sleep apnea is present is choking or gasping sounds that occur throughout the night. Sleep apnea causes a person to stop breathing repeatedly, and when this happens, they often end up choking or gasping for air. This warning sign is especially dangerous because if the sleep apnea is frequent enough, a person could really start to struggle with breathing, which means that the body may also suffer.
Loud or frequent snoring
While a lot of people do snore, a lot of them may do so because of sleep apnea. When snoring is extremely loud, it may be a sign that sleep apnea is occurring. Because the airway collapses during sleep apnea, the snoring may become very loud if there is difficulty with breathing. Sometimes, people snore lightly or occasionally, which doesn’t necessarily mean sleep apnea is present, but when the snoring becomes too frequent, it may indicate that sleep apnea is occurring.
Nocturia
Nocturia is often times a result of sleep apnea because sleep is continuously disrupted throughout the night. When a person is repeatedly woken up by their breathing problems, it is likely that they will wake up frequently throughout the night as well, thus causing the nocturia, or need to use the bathroom.
Headaches
Another warning sign that sleep apnea is occurring is if there are headaches when a person wakes up each day. Morning headaches are often a result of sleep apnea because the interrupted breathing causes the entire body to work overtime, including the brain. If sleep apnea symptoms become frequent enough, the headaches may increase each day.
